Unique Collection Page Ideas for Writers

This post on collection page ideas is part of a series I’ve created. If you’re not sure what collection pages are, view the tutorial here.

Collection Page Ideas for Novel Planning:

Premise Ideas

  • Great for your list of attempts at creating that perfect one line premise for your story, or jotting down several story premises you want to work on. Having them all in one place will make things easier when it’s time to pitch / promote / market your work.

Chapter Titles

  • You can have one page with all the chapters. Or one page for each chapter. You can write notes on the collection page for each chapter. Or you can simply include the page numbers for other pages in your journal that reference a particular chapter.

Character Collection Pages

  • Again, you can have one giant collection page or a page for each character. Include notes on the collection page, or page numbers to reference other pages in your journal about each character.
    • Another option is to use one collection page for every Character Interview. Be sure to thread or include page numbers for other areas in your bullet journal that reference that character.
    • Check here & here for ideas on how to interview your characters.

Brief Plot Points

  • This is an awesome way to create a brief summary of your novel, broken down into bullet points. You can also spread this out over several collection pages, for example “Climax,” “Prologue,” “Moral Theme,” “Story Ending,” “In Medius Res Ideas.”

Plot Twists

  • You can keep this with your “Brief Plot Points” Collection Page, or make a separate one just for the twists. I like doing it this way so they’re highly visible and easy to reference.

Finalized Plot / Outline

  • I don’t recommend writing your novel with a bullet journal – there’s just not enough room.
  • Instead, I use mine to finalize my outline – whatever that means for this plantser. Outlines are my nemesis, fyi. If they’re yours too, check out my How to Plot a Novel Series.
  • Anyway, I break it down by scene or chapter once I’ve figured out the order and content. After that, I set up a collection (usually a spread of 2-4 pages) for it. I keep it right at the front so it’s easy to reference when I’m actually writing my novel.

Random Notes / Brain Dump / General Story Information

  • Let’s face it, sometimes you have an idea about your work, but you just don’t know where to put it.
    • Save yourself some stress and designate a space in your journal just for this.
    • I leave three pages for this collection because I always have random ideas.

Mind Maps

  • Who doesn’t love a good mind map? I have these everywhere!
    • Most of my novel bullet journal is comprised of mind maps. I am more of a pantser than a plotter, so I don’t always have absolutely everything figured out when I write.
    • Mind maps help me organize my thoughts as I work through my ideas. Having them in my bullet journal keeps them organized and easily accessible when I need them.

Possible Endings

  • Do you know how your story will end? If not, you can use a collection page to test out some ideas.
