Self Care Collection Pages to Help You Love Yourself

This post about self-care collection page ideas is very special to me. Not only is self-care something that has dramatically improved my life. But I also recently began advocating self-care for writers. On Twitter, some questions came up about self-care and why it’s extra important for writers.

The following is a list of those questions as well as the answers I’ve come up with.

What is Self Care?

Self-care is… Well taking care of yourself. But it’s so much more than that. It’s showing yourself the love you deserve. This is something a lot of people, particularly empaths, struggle with. We all strive to take care of everyone else, often forgetting about taking care of ourselves. However, it’s easy to lose track. And it catches up with you. You start to feel tired and drained. You don’t do as much as you’d like to. Eventually, you break down and just can’t keep going anymore. Nobody wants that.

Practicing self-care regularly allows you to continue to take care of your loved ones, maintain your energy levels, and keep your creative spark alive. There are limitless ways to practice self-care. This post will cover many of them – including one of the most popular ways: journaling.

Why is Self Care So Important for Writers?

I am not a fan of generalizing any particular group. However, based on years of interacting with other writers, and some research into the topic, I have come to the conclusion that anxiety and depression among writers are higher than in the general population. (Learn more here & here.)

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Many of us write to deal with those feelings, to overcome an otherwise crippling condition. It’s an outlet and a healthy one. That being said, it’s not enough. Self-care is important for everyone. But for those of us with mental health issues (which honestly is just about everyone), it is even more important. Writers are more prone to anxiety and depression. So self-care should be a top priority.

Why Should I Bother?

I get this question a lot. I ask myself this question from time to time. People often will skip self-care to get one more thing done, to help one more person out. but they almost always regret it. So you need to start making self-care a priority to keep yourself strong and stable.

Here’s Why:

  • Self care boosts your immune system
  • Taking time for self care actually makes you more productive
  • Self care increases your self compassion, makes you more positive, and helps you deal with stress more easily
  • Practicing self care will help you find yourself
  • You’ll have more energy to help those around you if you take care of yourself first
  • Self care improves your emotional and physical health
  • Self care is precious alone time (Something I crave and I can bet a lot of my writer friends do too!)

What are Some Ways to Incorporate Self Care into My Routine?

Self-care is often the last thing on my mind, as I’m sure is true for many of you. One of the ways you can make sure you’re practicing self-care is with a self-care habit tracker (see below for more info).

Habit trackers are great for several reasons. They’re motivating. Everyone likes checking off that “done” box. They allow you to see where you need to improve (all those unchecked boxes). They’re a visual reminder to practice self-care every day – or at least every day that you use my bullet journal.

If you don’t have a bullet journal, schedule some self-care time slots in your day planner. Or just write it on a sticky note and put it somewhere you’ll be sure to see it.

You could also set a reminder on your phone. I recommend at least once a week to start. Then try to do it every day once you’re ready. When that reminder sounds off, stop what you’re doing and go take care of yourself.

Finding an accountability partner is a great way to make sure you’re doing all the things you’re supposed to be doing. That includes self-care. Find someone you trust. Tell them you want to start practicing self-care more. Have them check in on you once in a while to make sure you’re keeping up with your goals.

Ideas for Self Care Habit Trackers?

There are so many ways to create self-care habit trackers. My trackers are not super fancy or very pretty. They also change every week as my self-care goals change. Generally, I write down descriptions of the habits in my main weekly log area. Then I keep a tracker on the side panel of my weekly log.

You can also keep a collection page of self-care ideas. This way you have something to choose from when you can’t think of anything else:
